AlphaFold Database adds viral protein complexes for pandemic research

An open pandemic-preparedness portal containing high-confidence predicted viral protein complexes from human-health-relevant virus families.

Summary

The AlphaFold Database launched a pandemic-preparedness portal with 5,279 high-confidence viral heterodimers and 2,749 high-confidence homodimers generated across 2,812 proteomes from 23 virus families. It also incorporates 4,681 high-confidence homodimers from the Viral AlphaFold Database. The structures are openly available for academic and commercial research alongside portals for antimicrobial resistance and neglected tropical diseases.

AI role

AlphaFold2 and AlphaFold-Multimer predicted three-dimensional homodimer and heterodimer structures across 2,812 viral proteomes.

Narrative role

Extends a canonical AI-for-science resource from individual protein structures toward interaction-level viral biology, giving researchers a large public starting set for pathogen and pandemic-preparedness studies.

Caveat

These are computational predictions, not experimentally confirmed complexes. The release is limited mainly to dimers, omits important features such as viral-protein glycosylation and excludes many larger assemblies when confidence is inadequate.
