AI-assisted reconstruction yields a complete male fruit-fly brain and nerve-cord connectome

A peer-reviewed, openly accessible male Drosophila central-nervous-system wiring diagram with cell typing and sex-difference analyses.

Summary

A decade-long Google Research and HHMI Janelia collaboration published the complete male Drosophila brain and ventral nerve-cord connectome, containing more than 166,000 neurons and 125 million synaptic connections. Comparison with female connectomes found sex-dimorphic wiring across about 6% of connections and 18% of male neurons. The dataset supports analyses linking sensory inputs to motor outputs and was released for exploration and download.

AI role

Convolutional segmentation systems reconstructed neurons from electron-microscopy images; human experts proofread and annotated the resulting three-dimensional wiring map.

Narrative role

Marks a large AI-assisted scientific resource whose scale enables whole-system neuroscience and direct male–female circuit comparison. It extends earlier female-brain mapping rather than duplicating that event.

Caveat

AI segmentation was followed by years of human proofreading and annotation, so the source does not isolate an AI productivity effect. The resource concerns one fly specimen and downstream biological interpretations still require experiments.
